Ten Tips for Keeping Insects Away from Your Backyard Cookout
A backyard barbecue is the perfect way to bring friends and family together on Labor Day or any warm-weather holiday. You can keep most of the activities outdoors, and share many traditional family favorite foods and games. Cooking and eating outdoors just seems to make food taste better! So make sure to check out JustGreatSteaks to find the right grill that works for your needs and budget.
When you start grilling with a Traeger, it will not only attract those meat loving ladies, but also those pesky mosquitos that are even more eager to get a bite out of you. Unfortunately, insect pests are also attracted by the delicious sight and scent of your buffet. Follow these ten tips to keep ants, wasps, gnats and other picnic pests from spoiling your outdoor fun:
1. Clean up your backyard. A day or two before your cookout, mow the grass and trim back overgrown hedges to discourage fleas and ticks who dwell in moist, shady places.
2. Dump stagnant waters in bird baths, kiddie pools and unfiltered garden ponds where mosquitos may breed, and refill them with fresh, clean water the day of your party. Get rid of rotting vegetation and keep your garbage can covered.
3. Choose a dry, sunny area for entertaining. Put your serving away from hedges to prevent attracting the many insects that live within. Nearby flowering plants will draw bees and wasps, so choose a location in your back yard that will let your guests admire your landscaping efforts from afar.
4. Cook out in the middle of the day. The most mosquitos are out in the early morning and late evening hours. Fire up the barbecue in the late morning and eat in the early afternoon.
5. Keep food covered. Pests will be especially drawn to the sugary foods. Consider serving the food indoors and let your guests carry their plates into the back yard to eat. If it's more convenient to serve food outdoors, keep it in the house until the meat has finished cooking. Once your guests have been served, cover the containers and serving utensils. Take dirty dishes and eating utensils indoors or throw them away as guests finish eating.
6. Avoid bright colors. Flowery colors attract bees and wasps. Colorful tableware makes an attractive presentation, not only to your party guests but to insects as well. Use light-colored tableware and tablecloths for outdoor entertaining.
7. Don't use fragranced candles outdoors. Sweet-smelling candle scents will attract bees and wasps. Candles can create a lovely ambiance for an evening backyard cookout, but use unscented ones or citronella candles which keep mosquitos at bay. Citronella candles only protect the side of you that is toward the candle's light, so space them strategically around your eating area.
8. Don't attract insects to yourself. Wear light-colored clothing. Avoid flowery perfumes, scented body lotions and deodorants, or other scented personal care products which will attract bees and wasps.
9. Dispose of beverage containers as they are used. The sugary residue inside empty bottles, cans and cups that are left sitting around will attract insects. Stock up on cheap plastic cups with lids and straws for drink-spilling youngsters.
10. Use chemical yard foggers and insect repellants as a last resort. Avoid insecticides that contain DEET, and remember that even natural products may be toxic. Never spray insect repellants around uncovered food or beverages, and always follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

Build a Free Backyard Barbecue
Build a free backyard barbecue? Free? How is that possible you ask? Well, it is easier than you think and it really is free! You need a good place to start a fire, a shovel, firewood and a large metal grate. While those objects might not be free, you can certainly bet a metal plate or grate at a junk yard cant cost more than just a few dollars.
Begin building your free backyard barbecue by finding a suitable location to start a fire. Dig a basic rectangle or square about three feet by three feet and somewhere around the same depth. While these dimensions aren't accurate, what is needed is for your metal cover to fit over the hole completely. It really doesn't have to be metal in the first place. So long as it isn't toxic or completely flammable, wood could be used just as easily. A ¼" steel plate is recommended for the best effect.
Once your hole is dug, it is time to get the fire going. With a few newspapers and kindling start a fire in the pit. Chipped wood works best as well as small kindling, but larger splits can work too, it will just take a little more time to have them burn down to coals. A definite need is to have the wood be a non resinous wood like oak and to keep away from heavy resin woods like pine.
Now that your fire is burning, you're going to need to feed it until you get about a 3-4 inch layer of red hot coals in the pit. This will take a few hours, so in the mean time; you'll need to start the other half of the grilling project.
Cut some small green saplings about 1-4 inches thick that will fit across the pit.In other words your planning on creating a grill face with them over the coals. Soak them all in water for a few hours will the coals are building.
In the mean time, you can begin preparing the meat. Take whatever cuts of meat you prefer. Fish, beef, pork; they all work equally well. However, lean meats don't work as good as fattier cuts. You'll need to wrap them in a wax-free butcher's paper and tie them tightly. Now use several layers of wet newspaper to completely cover the meat.
Place down the wet saplings and add the meat on top. Immediately cover the entire hole with the metal plate and cover with the dirt you dug from the hole. Now all you need to do is wait about 8-12 hours and uncover for the best free barbecue ever.

Best Portable Gas Grills 2011
It seems that excellent outdoor cooking on the road is becoming more and more possible these days, based on the best portable gas grills 2017.
There are grills that are not only portable but provide excellent quality grilling, as well as some models of compact and collapsible grills for camping and beach trips - and let's not forget about the grills that are specifically made for tailgating parties! All in all, there is a nice variety that will very likely provide the perfect answer to any on the road grilling needs.
From the complete list of the Top 10 Portable Grills 2017, here are the first three picks:
Weber Q 100 Portable Grill - Weber's lineup of "Q" Series grills gives not only portability but some of the best quality cooking - especially for a grill of its size. There are various sizes of "Weber Q's," this one appears to be the smallest having a 189 square inch cooking area and a single burner. If this is all that is needed, this might just be the perfect portable grill due to its ability to last a long time with few or no problems. The retail price for the Q 100 is around $160.
Weber Q 320 Portable Grill - A larger version of the Weber Q grills, this one provides 462 square inches of cooking space and a higher heat level than the Q100, putting out 21,700 BTUs per hour and has double burners. Wherever I have seen this model from Weber, it also comes with a stationary cart having two wheels on one side to help move it from place to place with ease. Retail price for the Q 320 is around $480.
Coleman Road Trip LXE Portable Grill - This grill has a very cool collapsible design, making it a great choice for packing up on a camping trip. When unfolded and fully assembled, this grill has quite a number of great features including a couple of side tables, two burners (10,000 BTUs each) and porcelain coated cast iron grates for an easy cleanup. Considering the apparent quality and features that this grill provides, it seems that it is a good buy coming in at around $180 retail.
Other grills among the list of the best portable gas grills 2011 include models from Cuisinart, a Margaritaville tailgating model - and of course some additional grills from Weber.
